Question

My domestic partner and I have been together since 1991 and we have two children. If we were to separate, would there be any forms or anything I need to do to protect my children and myself? What measures would I need to take. A family friends keep saying that I need to fill out some forms that I don't know anything about.

Answer

Illinois now allows civil unions -- for both same sex and heterosexual partners. It is patterned after the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act. However you must enter into a civil union to obtain its benefits. There is insufficient information about the children to be of help; whose children are they?
