Question

what is the punishment if you sign the principals name of a paper to get into a school event. No money involved and over 18 years old.

Answer

Criminal forgery (a 14-year felony) requires more than just signing someone else's name. There also has to be an intent to injure or defraud, which might not really be going on. "Deceive"? Yes. but "defraud"? Maybe not. But I'm wondering if there is more to this story. Why would an 18-year old need a paper signed by a principal to get into a school event? Was the person banned by the school or a court ... like maybe convicted as a sex offender and this paper is the person's way to scam his/her way around the ban from school property or functions? If so, then a prosecutor could well believe there was a criminal intent to "defraud" ... or could say that it was all part of the crime of violating the sex offender registry laws (if my hypothetical is accurate).
