If the Tesla Roadster battery holds 53 kWh of electricity and the motor uses 185 kW how is the car able to keep going for more than half an hour?
185 kW is the motors peak output, or what the motor will gobble up with your foot flat to the floor. On a drive the motor will on average only be using a fraction of the peak power, hence the longer range. The Tesla and many other electric vehicles also use regenerative braking, where the motor acts as a generator under breaking putting energy back into the battery.
