Question

My 6 week old. granddaughter was taken from her mother and put into emergency temporary child protective custody, in Calif. I live in Nevada (4hs.away) and would like to get the temporary custody. What do I need to do,provide or say to get temporary custody of my granddaughter, while her mother completes the recommendation of court ordered requirements? I do not want my granddaughter to remain in the foster home! Thank you, Kim

Answer

Contact the CPS assigned officer in California. Tell her that you can offer placement for your grandchild. Have the mother "nominate" you as a viable placement. They may have to do an ICPC (Interstate Compact for Placment of Children)--investigation before they place the child in your home--basically run a background check on you and check out your home for safety.

CPS will usually look for relative placement rather than put the child in a long term foster home. Contact them in California and let them know that you are ready to help.

Good luck,
